March 2002 M. Lacasse In Case of Power Outage ======================= The power often goes out and comes back on within one minute (30 to 45 seconds is the programmed interval for the switch between the Smithsonian Generator and Citizen's Power). If the power is out longer there is probably a significant problem. For any Power failure, if the vacuum pumps are operating --  Immediately close the butterfly valve connecting the tank to the pumps. These pumps do not restart without manual intervention. If the power is off for more than a minute or two, you need to prepare a real outage.  Disable buzzer. Suggested procedure to conserve power for orderly shut down of the computers. Turn off:     (1)        Telescope motors (record positions!).                 { Lack of limits will prevent motion anyway.}     (2)        VME chassis     (3)        Anorad system, air to table, metrology laser.     (4)        Long delay motors, metrology laser, limits, computer monitor.     (5)        Printer and fax machine.     (6)        Perform orderly shutdown of Macintosh and Windows computers. You should now have about an hour or so for the last few computers.     (7)        If  you do not forsee power returning within the hour, do orderly shutdowns of the "Fringes" sun system, Long delay Linux, IOTA0 Linux,  and Control Sun system. * The time left with UPS power can be seen by pressing " * <9> *  " on the UPS keypad.  It is around a half hour with full up operation. A few of the things that go off when the power goes out include: * Items that affect observing: Vacuum pumps (switches are set not to restart when power comes back) Air compressor for Anorad  (this should be manually switched off and on after a power failure Telescope Limit information) Star tracker (amplifiers at telescopes, TE Cooler,                 Chiller, CCD Acquisition system monitors, flip in mirrors, cameras)    Note:  There is no UPS power in the shelters. * Non observing items: all heaters (heaters should never be connected to an orange plug!) most lights; emergency lights come on lights in tank intercom Leak detector                 Pneumatic valves should close and preserve vacuum at the test port for a little while. (an hour?) * May go off Internet, telephones on MMT RUPPs (a separate UPS system that might not be on.) Items that are on UPS: CB Com system Stepper motors telescopes and long delay Anorad system Metrology lasers computers:   Mac's, Windows,  VME (3 cpu + other stuff), Suns(2) , Linux(2) Internal nets and hubs, transceivers Portable phone GPS, WWV Fax machine, printer
